What we know about Cyno’s character so far in Genshin Impact

As the Mahamatra General of Sumeru Akademiya, Cyno has an imposing figure. But that intimidating side of him belies his ability to tell lame jokes and his love for the Genius Invokation TCG. (Photo: HoYoverse)

Genshin ImpactThe upcoming version 3.1 will see the long-awaited debut of Cyno, the 5-star Electro polearm wielder and General Mahamatra of the Sumeru Akademiya.

Longtime fans have known Cyno as Sumeru’s featured character in Teyvat Chapter Storyline: Travail and as the mage brought in by Lisa who saved Collei from her affliction in the Genshin Impact prequel manga.

But other than that, much of Cyno remains a mystery, at least until the release of version 3.1.

However, there have been crumbs here and there that help shed some light on who General Mahamatra really is. So, here’s what we know about Cyno’s character so far.

The Discipline Master of the Akademiya

Cyno is an intimidating figure at the Sumeru Akademiya.

As General Mahamatra, Cyno works to discipline and punish scholars who delve into shady work such as embezzlement, plagiarism, academic fraud, bribery, and other education-related crimes.

With what we know about Aaru Village being home to exiled scholars, we can surmise that one of the harshest sentences Cyno can hand down to a criminal scholar is banishment from the Akademiya.

In her character preview, we see Cyno in action. He ventures deep into the desert to hunt down a wayward scholar, who tells his hermit bodyguards that he is to fear General Mahamatra despite his small stature.

One interesting observation is that Cyno’s design draws heavily from Anubis, the Egyptian god of the dead who judges those seeking to enter the afterlife, pitting their hearts on a scale against a feather.

If the heart is lighter than the feather or has the same weight, Anubis will consider the mortal worthy to enter the afterlife.

Since Cyno is the judge of the Scholars of Sumeru, the design choice is very apt.

His relationship with Tighnari

But despite her intimidating demeanor as General Mahamatra, Cyno has a softer side.

In Tighnari’s Character Story 4, it is revealed that Tighnari and Cyno became friends after General Mahamatra discovered that the ranger was “upright and reliable” while performing his duties.

It was also through this friendship that Cyno entrusted Tighnari with Collei’s care after the events of the Genshin Impact prequel manga.

Tighnari also confirmed in his About Cyno voice line that General Mahamatra secretly visits Ghandarva Ville from time to time to check on Collei.

Although Cyno does his best to remain inconspicuous, the head ranger’s fluffy ears can’t be fooled.

Collei is a bit more reserved when it comes to Cyno. In his voice line about Cyno, Collei says that he would rather not talk about General Mahamatra.

But this is not because Cyno scares Collei, but because the trauma of what happened in Mondstadt is a constant reminder to her every time General Mahamatra is in the room.

But other than that, Cyno and Collei still have a good relationship, where she entertains him over dinner and they just hang out together.

Cyno also has a propensity for making really bad dad jokes.

As mentioned in the version 3.1 preview live stream, General Mahamatra takes his time thinking of a joke that is so unfunny that he ends up explaining how the joke works to the unlucky soul who ends up having to listen to him.

Perhaps it’s Cyno’s effort to appear a little less intimidating to his peers, but imagining him discussing the semantics of his joke in his deadpan manner doesn’t really help his image.

Once upon a time there was a traveler, stranded in the desert and dying of thirst, who desperately prayed for a Hydro Slime to cross his path. But the traveler didn’t realize that at that very moment, a hungry Hydro Slime was praying to meet a lonely, stranded traveler… What, isn’t that funny? Tsk, I think he’s hysterical. One of Cyno’s many bad jokes.

Besides telling bad jokes, Cyno’s other favorite hobby is Genius Invokation TCG, the collectible card game that is planned to be added to Genshin Impact as a permanent game mode in version 3.3.

Arataki Itto and Kamisato Ayato are two playable characters known to be avid fans of the game, though keen-eyed Travelers may also notice Lorewalkers playing it while idling in their camps.

But Cyno takes it to another level.

As Dori shares in her Cyno voice line, she was the one who supplied all the Genius Invokation TCG merch she could get to Cyno, who paid in full and didn’t even haggle.

Take it from General Mahamatra himself, he loves the Genius Invokation TCG. In one of his voice lines about himself, Cyno calls the card game “an art form”.

In my free time, I like to play Genius Invokation TCG with other people. Being able to express so much creativity and variation within a set of work rules makes it more than just a game – it’s an art form.Cyno in Genius Invocation TCG

Personally, I’m looking forward to seeing how serious Cyno can get when the Traveler challenges him to a du-du-du-du-duel…or a game of Genius Invokation TCG.

Cyno is a stoic guy with a cute and goofy side, and we’re sure fans will love him even more once he launches with version 3.1, which arrives on September 28.

Genshin Impact is currently at version 3.0, which will run until September 28 and features the release of Sumeru, Dendro, new characters, and a ton of more content.

Genshin Impact versions 3.0, 3.1, and 3.2 will have shorter run times of five weeks instead of the usual six weeks, and will likely catch up with the game’s original release schedule after version 2.7’s release was pushed back in April.
